What we owe you, in plain terms.
This page is short on purpose. If any of it is unclear, that is our failure and we would like to know — write to us and we will rewrite it.
If we have published something that is wrong, tell us and we will correct it. Corrections are published at the top of the case they belong to, dated, and never quietly folded into the text. We log every correction and publish the log annually.
Write to corrections@disclosureofjustice.com. We aim to acknowledge a sufficiently detailed request within two business days and to reach an initial determination within ten. What a request should contain, and how it is evaluated, is set out in the corrections policy.
When practicable we contact the subject of significant allegations before publishing, and give them a reasonable opportunity to respond. Responses are published in full, dated, and unedited — including responses that arrive after publication.
We do not offer sight of the full text before publication, and we do not agree to conditions in exchange for a response. The opportunity to respond does not give any person control over our reporting, headlines, editorial conclusions, or publication schedule.
Cases rest on the public record. Where a claim is our own conclusion rather than a cited record, it is marked as an allegation and stays marked until it is adjudicated.
Case pages mark each claim as either a fact or an allegation. A fact is supported by a cited public filing, docket, judgment or court record, and the citation is shown with the claim. An allegation is our own research conclusion, is not adjudicated, and is cited to the factual basis it rests on. We do not blur the two, and we do not report an allegation as though a court had settled it.
Victims and uncharged third parties are identified by role only. We do not publish Social Security numbers, driver's-licence numbers, dates of birth or residential addresses.
We hold no analytics, no advertising trackers, and no third-party scripts — this site makes no request to any server but its own. Server logs are discarded after 24 hours. Where a source has asked us to destroy material after verification, we destroy it, and we cannot produce what we do not hold.
If you are served with an order relating to material you sent us, tell us. Our legal defence fund exists for exactly that.
Case text and analysis are published under a Creative Commons Attribution licence: reuse it, translate it, republish it, with credit and a link. Source documents remain the property of whoever created them and are published in the public interest.
